Dust Off the Old Systems!

Remember back in the day when big-hitting games like Final Fantasy IX were released for a console right at the end of its generation? Sony has a history of continuing to release quality titles for their last generation systems even as the next generation is fast building steam. The PS2 is not an exception.

I'm an RPG fan, and recently there's been a flood of RPGs for both the PS2, as well as for Sony's under appreciated handheld, the PSP.

For starters, since the PS3 was released late last year, we've seen awesome games like Final Fantasy XII, Rogue Galaxy and Persona 3 hit the shelves for the PS2. Critically acclaimed action RPGs such as Odin Sphere (ok, so its more of a platformer with RPG elements) also took the spotlight, winning numerous gaming magazines' top honors.

On the PSP front there's games such as Brave Story: New Traveler, Jeanne d'Arc and Monster Hunter Freedom 2 which have all been recently released in North America that are receiving excellent reviews. (I can speak about Brave Story: New Traveler myself, as I'm currently playing it.)

In the next six months we look to see heavy hitting PSP titles like the remake of Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core (which has an absolutely amazing trailer taking the interwebs by storm as we speak).

So, its shaping up to be quite the year for RPGs on the PSP and PS2. We can't rule the PS3 out, but it doesn't appear that much is happening on that system as far as RPGs go this year. Next year might be a different story if we happen to see Final Fantasy XIII stateside. I have a feeling that one is going to be a system seller for Sony.
