I know, this game is what, a year and a half old? I finally got around to playing it. In fact, I ended up buying it I enjoyed it so much. There's not much to dislike about this title, but there's a lot to be apprehensive about if you've read about the game play and are a traditional RPG fan.
Back when this game won several RPG of the year awards for 2007, I blew it off because usually when I think about an RPG, I think about traditional, turn-based, Japanese-style RPGs. But, my definition is slowly broadening, thanks in part to games like this. (Note: That isn't to say I don't prefer JRPGs over Western RPGs, but I tend to rate a game on its own merits.)
Pros:
- Excellent sci-fi story, unexpected plot twists and all
- Great character development
- Detailed facial animation
- Large, detailed environments (for main plot worlds)
- Massive, player-driven narrative and great dialog
Cons:
- Many of the side-quest locations are cut-and-paste, repetitive
- Squad AI and pathing could use some work
- Overly complicated inventory/equipment system
In sequels, it would be nice to see streamlined inventory systems and more of a variety of environments - both interior and exterior. Also, some way to keep track of what planets in what systems you've visited and the number of untouched objects or unvisited locations would be quite welcome.
Overall though, Mass Effect is an engaging RPG/shooter hybrid and should definitely be in any 360 owner's game library.
