Mini-Review: Tomb Raider Underworld

I remember playing a good portion of Tomb Raider Legend for the PS2 back in the day, but I haven't really been a big fan of the franchise, or action games in general. But, I thought I'd give this one a try to see where I end up, because I did enjoy the demo.

Pros:

  • Multiple difficulty settings
  • Interesting story that grabs your attention right out of the gate
  • Great animation of Lara, as well as the flora and fauna that surrounds her

Cons:

  • Controlling Lara is a chore on land, and I won't even get into what a pain it is to swim underwater
  • The quality of the voices (the way they sound, not the acting) leaves something to be desired
  • Unclear objectives

This game is an exercise in patience. While the puzzles are incredibly fun, the platforming that makes up the bulk of the levels leaves a lot to be desired. A mixture of very loose control and poor direction to the objectives make for a lot of trial and error, or just sitting there and scratching your head trying to figure out where to go next. Especially the ledges you need to interact with much of the time - these need to be more pronounced and consistent, because they are overlooked so easily. I sat around for darn near half an hour trying to figure out how to get past a certain platforming "puzzle", jumping to what looked like ledge after ledge, but Lara wouldn't grab on. Finally, I figured it out, jumped to a ledge that looked exactly like the other ones that I had overlooked constantly because, well, it looked just like everything else that I couldn't grab hold of. It worked just fine, but there was no clear direction on where to go and that that ledge happened to work for a hand-hold while the others around the area would not. That is a bit ridiculous to me.

If you're a fan of the series, it’s a great looking game with some real nifty puzzles that aren't too hard or too easy. However, this isn't another Prince of Persia - the platforming is tedious at best and, unfortunately, that makes up a sizable chunk of the game.
