Remote Playing the PS3

In the last firmware upgrade the PS3 and PSP received, functionality was added to allow the PS3 to be remotely controlled by the PSP either inside the local network or over the Internet. This allowed some limited remote functionality such as listening to music, turning your PS3 on and off, etc. Nothing spectacular.

Earlier this week though, another firmware upgrade for each system was released. It was really an all around unremarkable upgrade - adding BlueRay 1.1 functionality to the PS3 and giving the PSP the ability to listen to Internet radio, among a few other things I wasn't overly interested in. I was going to take my sweet time downloading the updates.

Until today...

Apparently Sony snuck a stealth update in that firmware patch that greatly enhanced the remote play feature. You can now play any PS1 games remotely (read: anywhere in the world with an Internet connection) with your PSP - this includes downloaded games and game discs that you might still have in your collection. How snazzy is that?!

There is a bit of latency (especially if you're playing over the Internet), but you don't really need split-second reactions to play all my PS1 RPGs. So, I'm looking forward to getting some old-school gaming in while my wife is watching TV some night. ;)
