My brother and another friend of ours are huge fans of the Metal Gear franchise (and "huge" is putting it lightly). Naturally, they're both salivating over Metal Gear Solid 4, which will grace store shelves next week. Myself, I never really got into those games. As you all know, shooters don't interest me all that much.
However, the aforementioned MGS fans will be quick to point out that these games aren't shooters, but "tactical espionage action", or some such nonsense. Their general genre is action/shooter, don't pussyfoot around it. The sub-genre might be more of a "stealth/tactical" game, but its still, at its core, an action/shooter-type game. (On a side note, so is GTA4. It is not an RPG, for frak's sake.)
Anyway, enough with all that. I'm actually considering purchasing MGS4. I think part of the reason I never went back and played the PS2 games is because there are games I want to play more, and its hard to get into a new genre when there's many RPGs calling my name. Also, contrary to what I was told, the very first fight in MGS2 calls for...well...shooting. And again, that turned me off.
If the Metal Gear Solid games can be played and completed without firing a shot (probably a bit of an exaggeration, but its what I've been told nonetheless), then they darn well should be. I'll say it again: I dislike shooters. But, with all the hype surrounding MGS4, and, from what I hear, there's no need to backtrack and play the previous games as this game takes care of that through some unique methods, I might just be interested in playing it. If nothing else, when I go camping later this month, my brother will get to borrow my PS3 and I'm 110% sure he will not sleep for those four days if I leave him with MGS4.
I will, however, be reading through this MGS4 primer that Michael put together over at The Brainy Gamer. Perhaps it will work to get me a little more familiar with the story before I dive into the game.

MGS4 in My Future?

Just because you fire a gun, does not mean its a shooter. You fire guns in Final Fantasy games. All sorts of characters have guns :P You even fire them in first person view at targets in Crisis Core, but it is not a shooting game.
The gun is only one tool that Snake can use. I will admit, you can't go through the whole game without firing a single bullet (but only because some boss fights require it), but aside from that the gun is optional. In fact, the gun is the worst option you can use in most situations.
Its better to sneak up on them and knock them out, or throw an empty magazine a few yards to their right so they'll go check out the noise and you can sneak past, or throwing a captured snake at them, or sneaking up with them -with- a gun to hold them up for items and information and then knock them out, or putting on a croc hat to sneak up on them and scare them out of their wits, or stealing their clothes and trying to pass yourself off as one of them, or tuning into their radio to call off their alert, or using rotten food to poison them, or...you get the idea :P
Its a game set in modern times about political strife and war, it can't -not- have guns, but it defiantly isn't a shooter at its core. It only has some shooting elements.
And how do you know you don't like shooters? How many shooters have you really played? =p Which were they?
Well yes, I've tried quite a few action shooters and FPS games in my time.
I don't necessarily mind certain aspects of the game catering to more action over stealth. However, when it no longer feels like I'm playing what the game advertises itself to be, that's when we get to the problem and that's how I felt almost as soon as I started playing MGS2.
However, I do have MGS4 on pre-order. Hopefully I'll be done with Persona 3 by this weekend so I can start playing it. I'm hoping for a much better experience this time around.
It's awesome to hear you've got MGS4 pre-ordered. The series has consistently gotten better with each installment so I'm convinced that you'll enjoy it, even if ya had a hard time getting into MGS4.
The reason I make such a big fuss out of it is that I know you didn't pick up the game again after the very first boss. That's about 30-45 minutes into the game.
I confess though, the bosses in MGS2 are much more action based, but the bosses are only a section of the game. MGS3 on the other hand perfected the stealth bosses.
It depresses me that you're missing out on such great games after about an hour of play time. Maybe after you fall in love with MGS4 you'll revisit them though? =P
