My Office, The Bazaar

For the last couple weeks it seems like walking down the middle of the office I work in it like walking through a Middle-Eastern bazaar. There's all kinds of things to buy that various other people who also work in this office apparently got the permission to sell. Just today there's at least three displays of jewelery that have been set up with a nicely printed note in front of each one that reads: "Looking for a last-minute gift?"

As if the Christmas parties and cheery music weren't enough, now people are trying to get every last penny they can out of their co-worker's pockets by selling stuff at work. If it was up to me, I'd shoot down every last one of those requests to set up shop with, "No, this is a workplace, not a freaking department store!"

We Made It!

Well, we made it through yesterday's ice storm with little loss of power and only a short loss of cable. I was surprised, because usually the apartments we live in lose power if you look at the lines wrong.

Although, I hear you need to wear a hard hat outside, as the ice on the power lines is now melting and aiming straight for your head. I can see it fall off the lines from my office - I even saw a large chunk of ice narrowly miss someone as they walked their dog down the sidewalk on the other side of the street.

The power company I work for still has about 10,000 people out of power across the state of Iowa, but very few of those are in my area. It looks like this area held up pretty good this time around.

Go Away Monday!

Do you ever have those days where you just really don't want to be at work? I mean, sometimes I'll say on a Sunday night, "Ugh, tomorrow is Monday, I have to go back to work...", but I really don't mind going back to work on Monday. But, today is one of those days where I really don't want to be at work. I didn't sleep well last night and I'm horribly tired today.

It was an all-too-short "long" weekend, that's for sure. I kept myself busy by watching a couple movies, some anime and a couple things on TV I had recorded - Battlestar Galactica: Razor and Rise of the Videogame. They were both good. Razor definitely gave me my BSG fix while I wait for season three to come out on DVD and season four to start in the spring. The documentary series Rise of the Videogame was more interesting than expected, and I'm actually looking forward to the next part in the series.

Since it was Thanksgiving weekend, there was no new Atlantis this week, so I was a sad panda. Still, there's two new episodes before they break until next year, and by the sound of them, they're going to be really good.

I also started reading a book that was recommended to me by my brother - Devices and Desires, by K.J. Parker. I'm not a fast reader by any means, I just finished the (incredibly long) first chapter today. It sounds a bit interesting, so I'll probably continue and we'll see where it takes me.

I also spent quite a bit of time playing through FFXII once again, this time with the goal in mind to complete every single side quest in the game (including hunting all marks, optional bosses and espers). On top of that, I got some WoW time in for good measure.

But, like I implied earlier, I hate coming back to work after a "long" weekend...which is one of the reasons I really don't want to be here today.

"Is your wife a gamer, too?"

I was just asked that question less than 30 minutes ago. See, there's a few of my co-workers here who are gamers, as well. Most of them play WoW, as well. And, we were chatting a bit. I had to tell them, "Not really".

Although, I am hopeful that Danielle might take a liking to Final Fantasy XII, which I finally convinced her to try out recently. She also has been known to play games like Nintendogs and The Sims in the past. She has already said the words all gamers utter at some point or another while playing (paraphrased, of course): "Let me just do real quick, then I'll stop".

I've created a monster!

A Post a Day...

I've been trying to post at least one item of interest each day, whatever it may be. However, a couple times this weekend I just didn't get the chance. I was pretty much out of it for the last couple days, not being able to sleep. I seem to go in cycles - I'll sleep fine for a period of time, then have insomnia for a period of time.

I missed work on Monday because I wasn't feeling great and couldn't sleep Sunday night...then I couldn't sleep Monday night and stayed up until the wee hours of the night watching reruns of Star Trek Voyager on SpikeTV. I started feeling worse and didn't sleep at all Monday night, so I didn't make it into work on Tuesday. Last night I slept, but not all that well. At least I made it into work today. So, only two days of work this week for me...and three next week...if I survive that long. ;)

How to Make a Bad Job Good

Think we've all needed these from time to time...
