I'm a big fan of Japanese-style RPGs (JRPGs for short). I don't mind turn-based battles, random encounters (within reason), extra cute characters and cliché story lines. Don't get me wrong though, new ideas and deviation from those tried and true standards are always welcome (like FFXII, for example).
My favorites are probably the Final Fantasy, Star Ocean and Xenosaga series. To be honest, I've only played one game in the Tales series, and that was Tales of Symphonia on the GameCube. I really enjoyed it, but just haven't gotten the chance to try any of the others.
The PS3 seems to be lacking this particular sub-genre of games, however. The only one, as far as I can find, is Enchanted Arms. That game didn't go over so hot (its an XBox 360 port), but I'd still like to try it out. The lack of PS3 JRPGs will hopefully change in the coming year - Eternal Sonata (another 360 port) and possibly Final Fantasy XIII, Star Ocean 4 and, now, a new Tales game - Tales of Vesperia. I'm not a super huge fan of cell-shaded games, but I do like them if they're done right (I loved Rogue Galaxy, for example).
So, here's hoping we see some great JRPGs on the PS3 in 2008. After all, Sony's console line has always been noted for its overabundance of RPGs.
