PS3 Game Demos

Since I bought my PS3 last weekend, I've downloaded and played through three demos. Of those three, only one really appealed to me, which was Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. The entire first level was in the demo and it was really fun. However, I was reminded at one point why I hate 3D platformers - I have bad aim.

The entire demo takes place high up on walkways in a city, so you can fall off to your death if you're not careful. There's certain parts where you enter these sky walk segments where the walkway is crumbling beneath you or being blow up in front of you. You have to jump over holes and dodge explosions all while fighting loads of enemies. The one saving grace in these situations is that you didn't have to worry about camera control - it was fixed for those parts of the level. And, I must say, they do a good job of putting the camera in a good location so its easy to perform your task at hand.

The part I really liked about the demo was the "rail surfing". That was pretty slick. I understand that particular mechanic has been part of some past R&C games, but I've only played the very first one and so am not real familiar with previous level design.

The two main qualms I have (besides my bad aim, which I can't really blame on the game) is the camera and the targeting. The camera may be configurable in the full version of the game, but its not in the demo, and it controlled exactly opposite of the camera in Oblivion, so that was giving me all kinds of issues. There is a weak targeting system for your ranged weapons (like the blaster they give you at the start of the demo). It doesn't always target things and sometimes just blasts precious ammo into thin air. Again, this might be changed, updated or have more to it in the full game, but I'm going off what I played in the demo here.

Overall it was a really fun first level - enough to make me consider possibly buying the full version of the game.

Two other demos I've tried are Uncharted and Folklore, both of which were mediocre (although they both looked gorgeous).
